J. Robert Wharton
J. Robert Wharton, familiar figure here, died Sunday morning. Mr. Wharton, a lifelong resident of this community, was 85 years old. He resided on East Main Street. Mr. Wharton was a former businessman of Cambridge City. He operated a tavern here before retiring from business a few years ago. Early in life he worked as a farm hand near Cambridge City. Wharton's grandfather came here from Virginia and homesteaded a farm south of Pennville, known as the Carl Kauffman farm. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. J.E. Bender, Miami Beach, Fla.; Mrs. W. L. Helmsing, Richmond; and Mrs. Florence Shirkey, Cambridge City; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one sister, Mrs. Daniel Boyer, Richmond. Funeral services are being held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Howard & Son Funeral home. Rev. Glen L. Barger of the Lutheran church, East Germantown, officiates. Burial in the Lutheran cemetery, East Germantown.
