The family of George Allen Wanamaker lived at 258 North Auburn Street, Grass Valley, Nevada County, CA. The picture is of the home as it appeared in Oct. of 2012.

Only the name G. A. WANAMAKER survives engraved in coping, there was one temporary metal marker present in the plot with the name John C. Roberts (believe this marker belongs elsewhere in this cemetery).

Research revealed G. A. Wanamaker's full name was George Allen Wanamaker.

George Allen Wanamaker sailed into San Francisco Harbor in 1863 and was for a short time employed in San Mateo County. A little later, he made his way to Nevada County where he was first occupied in the sawmills at Scott's Flat. Not long afterward, he ventured to Grass Valley where he founded his own business, known as the Wanamaker Dray Line. He would remain in this line of business for 50 years.

On July 6, 1874, in the 14th District Court in Nevada City, George became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Immediately following his Sept. 3, 1874 marriage to Martha Elizabeth George in Grass Valley, he and his wife established their home at the head of North Auburn Street. Here, two daughters would enter the Wanamaker household; Mary Alice on August 5, 1875 and Lorene Maude on October 18, 1877.

In his younger days, George became a fireman and was a charter member in the Eagle Hose Company. He later was twice elected to the position of fire chief, first in 1884 and again in 1911. It was said that his interest in the fire department never waned, even after becoming an octogenarian and that he had in the early part of 1925 "compiled a condensed history of the local fire companies giving the names of each fire chief". Prior to his death, George had the distinction of being the last living charter member of the fire department.

George attended Grass Valley's Emmanuel Episcopal Church where he served for many years as Senior Warden of the Vestry. He was also a member of the Half Century Club.

His funeral was held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church and he was interred in Elm Ridge Cemetery. It was also found that his wife and daughter, Maud, were buried at Elm Ridge. His other daughter, Mary Alice Mitchell, who died in Nevada County on June 8, 1948, is buried nearby, in the Masonic Cemetery, with her husband Frederick Mitchell.

The Wanamaker's called 258 North Auburn Street, Grass Valley, home.
