Oran began his education near Longford, Kansas in a one room school. At age seven his mother passed away and he moved to Kansas City, MO with his father, attending public schools and graduating from Westport Senior High in June of 1928. He graduated from what is known today as Kansas State University in June, 1934 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and post graduate work in Civil Engineering.
His first job was with his uncle, Harold Gingrich, at his service station. He was soon hired by the Kansas State Highway Commission in November, 1934, and during the next six years he worked in several departments and in nearly every county of the state.
On December 23, 1940 Oran was called to active duty with the National Guard, 35th Division, in Topeka, Kansas, then reported to Camp Robinson, Arkansas. He was in charge of plans and construction of road and an instructor for officers and enlisted men at Camp Robinson. In November, 1941 Oran transferred to the Army Reserve and began working in Parsons, Kansas at the Kansas Ordnance Plant. He was an Industrial Engineer planning buildings and production layouts for these buildings. It was here that he met his wife Sara Jane Patterson, they married at the home of her parents in Hutchinson on February 14, 1942. In 1945 they were blessed with the birth of their daughter Patricia Ann.
During World War II Oran used his knowledge as the Commanding Officer of a RADAR team, Property Disposal Officer for the Air Corp in Kansas and Base Engineer for Clinton County AAF, Ohio. In May, 1947 he was released from active duty as a Captain and returned to civilian life in Kansas City. There he went to work for the War Assets Administration. From 1949 to 1952 he owned a hardware business and was a contractor in Martin City, MO. He also served a year and a half with the Air Force Reserve during that time in California and Kansas City.
Oran continued to use his engineering skills in military and civil service until his retirement. He retired from the Air Force Reserve in March of 1971, and from Civil Service with over 30 years in June, 1974.
Oran married Lena Jane Van Hoorebeke Watson, widow of John Watson, March 19, 1971. As of 1980, Oran was building a microcomputer, working on watches and genealogy. Oran made a large contribution to the history of the Emrich family, publishing several books. This writing is based on his own writing from Descendants of John Emrich, a looseleaf notebook that I believe was his first work, put together for his family members.
