Margaret ‘Peg' Cane

Margaret "Peg" Cane, 84, of Duluth, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, in St. Luke's hospital with her family by her side.

She was born on Sept. 29, 1927, in Brainerd, Minn., to Ben and Agnes (Peck) Anderson. She married Melvin Cane on April 18, 1953, in Pequot Lakes, Minn.

Margaret graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in 1950 with a degree in nursing. She began her nursing career at the Universiy of Minnesota Hospital, working as head operating room nurse. After marrying and returning to Duluth, she trained LPN's at Miller (Miller Dwan) and St. Luke's hospitals. Continuing in her role as a teacher, she was hired as an instructor of medical-surgical nursing in 1970 at the College of St. Scholastica. While raising a family and working full time, she went on to attain her Master's Degree in Education. In her 20 years of employment at St. Scholastica, besides her teaching duties, she was instrumental in the development of the RN Completion Program, which became the forerunner for other off-campus management programs. She retired in 1990, and in 2011, she was presented with the Sister Ann Edward Scanlon Award, which honors an alumnus who manifests dedication to his or her community and to the College of St. Scholastica. Margaret was a mentor to many faculty and nursing students throughout her extensive career.

Margaret was a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church, the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary, and an active board member of the Lake Superior Life Care Center.

Margaret loved to travel near and far with family and friends. She cherished spending time with her sister, Corinne. She was an avid reader; the #1 fan of the UMD women's soccer team, and never missed the chance to attend her grandchildren's sporting events. She opened her heart and home to all, including many international students.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin; brother, Don; brother-in-law, Don Coffey.

Margaret is survived by her children, Kathleen (Shoken) Masuoka of Fukuoka, Japan; Barbara, Mary, and Gregory (Patti) Cane, all of Duluth; Rose (Damian) Topousis of Wayzata, Minn.; grandchildren, Halima (Johnny) Cegur, Leina (Satoshi) Kamada, Keisa, Emily, Alex, Amanda, Kasey, and Taylor; great-grandchildren, Seigo, Henry, Shiho; sister, Corinne Coffey of Manitoba, Canada; sister-in-law, Valerie Anderson of Las Vegas, Nev.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
