Pittsburgh Press, February 21, 1910:

A. C. Ackard, aged 79 years, a retired river captain, and father-in-law of Speaker John F. Cox, died yesterday at his home on Fifth avenue, Homestead. From his youth Captain Ackard followed the lower rivers, most of the time in command of Pittsburg coal boats, until his retirement 15 years ago. He was active in Democratic politics and had served several terms in the Homestead council. In the Civil War he served as a member of the One Hundred and Forty-First Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Captain Ackard was a charter member of General Charles Griffin Post, G.A.R., of Homestead, and had filled most of its offices. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. John F. Cox, Mrs. Edward Stewart and Captain A. A. Ackard Jr., all of Homestead.
