Opal Secreta Kennedy August 23, 1924 - March 18, 2014

Funeral for Opal Secreta Kennedy, 89, Lawton will be at 10:00 AM Friday, March 21, 2014 at Cameron Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Teel, pastor officiating.

Mrs. Kennedy died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 in Lawton.

Burial will be at 3:00 PM Friday at the Strong City Cemetery in Strong City, Oklahoma under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.

She was born August 23, 1924 at Strong City, Oklahoma to John W. and Sara J. Rogers.

She grew up in the Strong City, Oklahoma area.

She married Doyle Walker on May 4, 1940 in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. He died December 24, 1981.

As a young mother, Opal labored tirelessly on the family farm to provide for her growing family. She realized that the way to a better life lay in education. This required persistent and extraordinary determination.

After years of hard work and great sacrifice, she completed high school and then overcame even greater challenges to obtain her college diploma in three years while caring for five children; Charles Eugene, Betty Charlene, Irene Darlene, Faye Marie and Joyce Ann.

Opal graduated from Sayre Junior College in 1956 and received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford in 1958 and a masters degree in Home Economics in 1962.

She taught home economics, science and English in Cooperton, Oklahoma from 1959 to 1964.

In 1964 she moved to Lawton, where she worked with Comanche County Home Extension Service until 1967, when she began teaching science and English at Eisenhower Junior High in Lawton. She retired on May 31, 1991.

She married Floyd Kennedy of Lawton on September 8, 1998.
