Howard Hunter Gordon

1923 - 2012

VETERAN

Our husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend Howard Gordon passed away on Monday September 10, 2012, surrounded by family. He was born May 29, 1923, in American Fork, Utah, to George Hudson and Jane Hunter Gordon. He was the third youngest child in a family of nine.

Howard served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946; in Hawaii for two years and then in the invasion and occupation in Japan. He met Elaine Wood at Brigham Young University and on June 11, 1948, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple. He graduated from BYU in 1948 with degree in accounting and business administration. In 1955 he was employed at US Steel, Geneva Works as a supervisor and retired in 1983 after 28 years of service.

Howard served on the Board of Directors and as president of American Fork Junior Chamber of Commerce. He received the Distinguished Service Young Man of the Year award in 1955. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Howard has served in various church callings, including: high priests group leader (numerous times), and as a ward and stake missionary. His favorite calling was as bishop of the American Fork 8th Ward.

He especially enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, gardening, and camping with family and friends. He and Elaine especially loved traveling in their motor home. He coached his sons in baseball, basketball and golf. He himself was an avid golfer, a fun grandpa and a man of faith. He lived a full, rich life. On top of this, he had such optimism and saw good all about him.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; children: Lynda (Dennis) Larson, Jill (LaMar) Carroll, Craig (Debbie) Gordon, and Kevin (Lori) Gordon; 16 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Ilene, Edna, Norma, Donna; and brothers: Glen, Art, Dean and Paul.

The family extends gratitude to his many kind friends and neighbors and to the outstanding caregivers Linda, Leah and Quinn with Utah Home Health and Hospice.
