Wound Fatal to Perry Night Officer

Treadway is Killed when Man Escapes

Trapped In Drug Store Here Thief Shoots Way To Freedom
REWARD IS OFFERED
Nightwatchman Dies At
Guthrie Hospital Early Saturday

Within a room at the Methodist hospital at Guthrie, William Franklin Treadway, 46 years old, Perry night watchman, at 6:20 o'clock Saturday morning, paid with his life for protecting the property of Perry citizens.

Shot through the neck by an unknown lone robber who he had trapped in the Nelson drug store early Friday morning, Treadway died as a result of the bullet wound, when his spinal cord was punctured by the shot from the thief's gun.

Paralyzed by the wound, and suffering with loss of blood, Treadway passed away a little more than twenty-four hours after he had been shot, while officers here still possessed no clue as to the identity or trace of the murderer.

Reward is Offered

A reward of $500 for the arrest and conviction, or for information which, may lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who shot and killed Treadway, was offered Saturday by the City of Perry, according to a notice issued by H. H. Reynolds, mayor. Every possible clue to the assailant of the well known Perry policeman is being followed up by Noble county officers, city officers, and officers of adjoining counties in an effort to apprehend the killer.

Only one bullet struck Treadway, physicians at the hospital report, although it was rumored that he was shot twice. The bullet dropped from Treadway's clothing as they were removed at the hospital. An x-ray picture showed the path of the shot, which traveled through one side of Treadway's neck to the other, striking his spinal cord and causing the paralysis and death.

Funeral services for the officer have not been made, awaiting word from relatives in California. The body is being held at the Christoph and Newton funeral parlors.

Pioneer of Perry

Born February 29, 1884, in Neosho, Missouri, Treadway came to Perry at the opening of the Cherokee strip to settlement, living on a farm with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James A. Treadway, one mile west of Perry, until 1918.

After being in the trucking business for a period of time, Treadway went to California, remaining there for a year, before returning to Perry two years ago. Since his return to this city he has been in the police department.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Clara Treadway, three children at home, Vera 18 years old, Frank, 12 years old, and Jimmy, 9 years old, and two daughters living in Walnut Creek, Calif., Mrs. Merle Day and Mrs. James LeRoy Baker; his parents, Mr. And Mrs. James A. Treadway, of Perry; four sisters, Mrs. Nellie Otto, of Tulsa; Mrs. Ester Hatfield, of Walnut Creek, Calif., Mrs. Ted Cordell of Norman, and Mrs. Carrie Sandy of Saranap, Calif., and three brothers, Dee Treadway, of Perry, and Poke and Jesse Treadway, of Saranap, California.
