He came west from Louisiana to work for a construction company that was erecting water tanks for the smelter in Bisbee. Before World War I, he started working part-time in the railroad shop as a hostler and wiper. “I guess I did every job there was to do in the shop,” he said.
In 1917, he and his wife moved to Globe, where he worked as a fireman and engineer at the Old Dominion Mine until it closed in the 1930s. When they were leveling a lot for their home, they used a pick and shovel. They built just the outside, and built the inside later. He did all the cabinet work himself, including bookshelves, cabinets, a buffet, and picture frames.
From 1937 to 1957, when he retired, he was employed as an engineer on the railroad at Inspiration Copper Company.
The couple had three children.
