Initially Rense worked for the railroad in Claresholm as the family had no money and little food. His son, Ralph died in 1917 of tuberculosis. Rense died in 1919 of peritonitis. Another son, Rense was born after his death on May 16 1919. Rense Jr died at age 15 years.
After Rense's death Bert & Herman operated the farm with the assistance of a hired hand.
