WIFE DIES, HER HUSBAND IS FOUND DEAD

In an unusual chain of circumstances a Garrett Mortician went to notify a Garrett man Monday morning that his wife had died in the Garrett Community hospital and found the man dead on the davenport in his living room.

Mrs. Nora Smeed, 86, of 200 East King street entered the hospital on March 20 and died Monday at 8:20 a.m. The Baidinger & Walter funeral home was called.

Joseph Baidinger went to the residence about 9:30 to notify the husband, Edwin Smeed, 59, When he entered the living room of the home a roomer, John Hollis, was sitting in a chair reading a newspaper and Mr. Smeed was on the davenport.

When Mr. Baidinger stated that he had come to notify Mr. Smeed of his wife's death Hollis said, "I will wake him up." Hollis went over and shook Smeed and exclaimed, "He appears to be dead!"

Dr. F. B. Kantzer of Garrett was summoned in place of Dr. L. E. Jinnings of Garrett, who is the DeKalb county deputy coroner now vacationing in Florida. According to an investigation made by Dr. Kantzer, Mr. Smeed and Mr. Hollis had been watching television Sunday night. Hollis stated that he went to bed about 11 p.m. Mr. Smeed later turned off the television set and laid down on the davenport. He often slept there. Dr. Kantzer places the time of death at between midnight and 5 a.m. either from a cerebal hemorrhage or heart attack.

Hollis stated that he came downstairs about 6 a.m. Monday and thought that Mr. Smeed was merely asleep on the davenport, so he did not disturb him. Mr. Smeed had been in poor health for many years and Mrs. Smeed had been ailing for several weeks. A complication of diseases caused her death.

Double funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Baidinger & Walter funeral home in Garrett. The Rev. Peter E Soudah of the Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial of Mrs. Smeed will take place in Calvary cemetery, Garrett and Mr. Smeed will be buried in Woodlawn cemetery, near Auburn. The couple was married at Angola about five years ago.

Mrs. Smeed was born on Oct. 22, 1876, in LaGrange county and she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Newton Holsinger. She had resided in Garrett for over 60 years.

Survivors include two brothers, Orton Holsinger of Dupo, Ill., and Virgil Holsinger of Brighton, and two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Banta of Kendallville and Mrs. Tiny Conley of Sturgis, Mich.

Mr. Smeed was born in Garrett on Oct. 20, 1903, and he resided in the city all of his lifetime. He was the son of Jasper C. and Reba Smeed.

He was a former employee of the Dana Corp. in Auburn.

Surviving is a brother, Donald Smeed of St. Petersburg, Fla.
