O.F. LUCAS DIED TUESDAY NIGHT AT HOME ON WHITNEY

WAS ONE OF OLDEST AND MOST HIGLY ESTEEMED RESIDENTS OF CITY AND COUNTY -- HAD HELD MANY OFFICIAL POSITIONS OF TRUST -- FUNERAL TO BE HELD FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

Oscar F Lucas, for many years a prominent, and highly esteemed resident of this county and city passed away on Tuesday evening at 11:30 o'clock at his home, 1107 Whitney street after a sickness of two weeks resulting from the infirmities of advanced age he having nearly reached that of 79years. His death came on the birthday anniversary of his son, Wilmer Lucas.

The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house. Rev. H.F. Lawyer officiating. The burial will be in the Blood's Point cemetery. It is requested by the family that flowers be omitted.

Capt Lucas, as he was familiarly called by his friends, although the designation had not come from military service, was born in DeKalb county, November 9, 1840. His father Horace Lucas and family came to DeDalb county from Indiana in 1838. His marriage to Miss Almira Lawton took place January 16, 1862, and the home was made on the farm which was situated partly in Flora, this county, and partly in DeKalb county. Mrs Lucas died December 27, 1894. To them was born the son, Wilmer, mentioned. His second marriage was to Mrs Alice Taylor Fellows of Kingston taking place on June 19, 1897. There survive his widow, the son, Wilmer; a brother, Walter who was the first white child born in the town of Flora; a brother Moses, all of this city; a sister, Mrs Olive Tillson, of Boone Iowa, who is here having been called by the sickness of her brother and two grandchildren.

Mr Lucas served as a member of the board of Supervisors of this county from the town of Flora six years and as assessor of the town four years. In 1900, Mr and Mrs Lucas moved to Belvedere, occupying the present family residence at the number on Whitney street above mentioned.

He was one of the two surviving charter members of Boone County Mutual insurance company in which organization he had held every official position , and was its secretary for the last twelve years. He was a member of the YMCA board of directors for several years. He had been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for over fifty years and a member of the official board of that church for the last eighteen years.

The departed longtime resident wa a man of high principle and true Christian character and drew to him a large number of friends by his dependable qualities and consistent living and his genial kindly deportment. He was of the enterprising and helpful citizenship in the communities where his home was made. His influence was always for good and his demise will occasion widespread regret and sorrow. To the bereaved family will be given much sympathy in the less they have sustained.

Oscar T Lucas, well known in this vicinity, who was born in northern DeKalb county nearly 79 years ago, passed from this life at his home at 1107 Whitney street, Belvidere, at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15. He had been in poor health the past few weeks and his advanced age and general breaking down were the direct cause of his demise. the federal services were held at the home at 2 o'clock p.m. las week Friday, Rev. H.T. Lawyer, pastor of the Belvidere Methodist church, officiating, and burial was in the Blood's Point Cemetery. The deceased was born November 9, 1849. He was united in marriage of January 16, 1862 to Miss Almira Lawton and they made their home on the farm which was situated partly in Boone county and partly in DeKalb county. Mrs Lucas passed from this life on December 27, 1894. To them was born one son Wilmer who resides on the old homestead. the deceased was again married on June 10, 1897 to Mrs Alice (Taylor) Fellows of Kingston, and in 1900 they moved to the home in Belvedere. Cant Lucas, as he was familiarly known by his host of friends was a man of high ideals and true Christian character, always ready and willing to promote a good cause and his manly influence will be greatly missed. He was a member of the Metodist church for over 50 years and for a number of years a member of the official board. He leaves to mourn his departure besides his beloved wife and son Wilmer, one sister Mrs Olive Tillson of Boone Iowa and two brothers Walter and Moses of Belvidere, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
