Mary Ann was the only child of Gabriel F. Keath, Jr. and his first wife, Elizabeth Bly. She married Elijah R. Spain; a son of William Spain and his wife, Mary Cole. Mary Ann and Lige were wed on February 9, 1854 in Iroquois County, Illinois. They had twelve children; seven sons and five daughters.

OBITUARY NOTICE: Iroquois County Times of Iroquois County, Illinois; article dated August 18, 1877. Excerpt, ". . . Mrs. Elijah R. Spain, of Ash Grove, died Friday August 10th. . . ."

OBITUARY NOTICE: Watseka Republican of Watseka (Iroquois County), Illinois; article dated August 23, 1877. Excerpt; ". . . We are pained to record the death of the wife of our mail carrier from Pitchin, E. R. Spain. She died at Ash Grove August 10th, aged 37 years. She had been sick for some time. Was buried at the Ash Grove Cemetery; . . . Mr. Spain has the sympathy of the whole community . . ."
