Obituary from the Greensboro Record of Wednesday, Aug. 1, 1917:

JOHN C. KIRKMAN DIES AFTER A LINGERING ILLNESS---Mr. John C. Kirkman, 633 Walker Ave., died this morning at St. Leo's hospital after several weeks illness. Mr. Kirkman was one of Greensboro's oldest citizens, having lived here the greater part of his life, and perhaps was one of the oldest in point of service of the employees of the Southern railway here. Mr. Kirkman was in his sixty-ninth year, and started work as a laborer for the Southern on Oct. 14, 1866, and was promoted to track foreman on July 3, 1874, which position he held until last February.

Mr. Kirkman was a Confederate soldier, having joined the army May 1, 1864, and was private in Company E Second North Carolina Infantry, belonging to Ransom's Brigade, Rhodes Division, Ewell's Corps in the Northern Army of Virginia. When he was mustered into service, he was only four feet eleven inches high, and weighed 82 pounds, but regardless of his size, he made a valuable soldier and was in five of the largest battles of the Civil War, and was captured at the evacuation of Petersburg, and was paroled in Washington April 7, 1865.

The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Della Kirkman, three sons, A.A. Kirkman of Victoria, Va., J.A. Kirkman, Tifton, Wyo.; C.M. Kirkman, Pomona; and two daughters, Miss Iola Kirkman, and Mrs. J.M. Hunt of Greensboro.

Mr. Kirkman waa a member of the Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellows, and Masonic Lodges.

Funeral arrangements had not been made at this writing."
