FORMER SHIVELY COUNCILMAN OMER J. HANKE DIES AT 76 - Former Shively Councilman Omer J. Hanke died yesterday at his home. He was 76. Jefferson County Deputy Coroner Sue Wurst said his death was due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Family members found Hanke unconscious yesterday morning in his home, which was filled with natural gas because of a leak, perhaps from the furnace, Wurst said. He was taken to Caritas Medical Center, where he died about 9:30 a.m., she said. Hanke served two terms, from 1962-1966, as a Shively councilman and then served on the city's sewer board. He resigned from the board in 1971 and ran for councilman again but lost. Hanke became an agent for the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission in 1972 and was promoted to Louisville-area supervisor four years later. ... He was also a retired photo engraver and former employee of Standard Gravure Corp. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Dixie Post 220 and Dixie Independent Democrat Club. His survivors include a son, Danny Hanke; four daughters, Pat Clark, Brenda Logan, Peggy Griffith and Debbie Alvey; two brothers, Elston and Paul Hanke; a sister, Lucille Spears; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 1925 Lewiston Drive, with burial in Highland Memory Gardens in Mount Washington. Visitation will be at Keenan's Funeral Home, 4724 Dixie Highway, from 6-9 p.m. today, 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. tomorrow and after 8:45 a.m. Monday. The family asks that memorials be made to the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Association.
