Sharps is best remembered by the rifle mfg. company that bore his name, Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company. Improved rifles were carried in a linen cartrige form by Berdans Sharpshooters in the US civil war until replaced by a metallic cartridge rifle. The US calvary carried a Sharps carbine. Later Sharps rifles were the preferred firearm during the buffalo hunts of 1870-1883.

Sharps himself was no longer a member of this company having resigned is office earlier. The company ceased manufacture in 1881, just before the near demise of the buffalo. Even so, Sharps rifles were winning competitons long after the company ceased.

Sharps gravesite is not known. His remains may have been moved from Monument cemetery in Philadelphia to Laurel Hill/potters field.
