Henry was the oldest of six children born to William and Lucy G. (Sanborn) Brown. His father made his living as a mason. Henry became a carpenter.

Sometime before 1850 Henry married Hannah Elizabeth Boothby of Leeds, Maine. This couple appeared in the 1850 census in Lowell with an infant child. By the 1860 census the family was back in Leeds. They appeared in the 1860 census with three sons; Walter, Arthur, and George, ages 9, 6, and 2 respectively. A month before the census Henry and Hannah lost a baby girl. Lizzie Eva died at ten months old of "dropsy of the brain." The modern term for this condition is called "acute hydrocephalus." Water accumulates in the brain and enlarges the skull of a small child. The end result was often death. Lizzie is buried near her Boothby grandparents.

The family apparently moved back to Lowell, as Hannah died there in 1862 of consumption. The preceding year Henry's mother Lucy and sister Abbie also died of consumption, and in 1863 his sister Emma died of unknown causes. Henry had also lost two siblings, Benjamin and Martha, four days apart in 1854, also of consumption. All of these family members are buried in this cemetery.

Henry returned to Maine and in 1865 married Susan Jane Towle of Leeds, and had four additional children. They lived in nearby Winthrop, Maine This couple later divorced. It appears that only the younger two children stayed with Susan, and perhaps the older two lived with Henry. One of his children by Susan, Edwin, became a very interesting detective.

Henry married a third time. He died in Milford, New Hampshire in 1898.
