Joel P. Smith
Joel Phillip Smith, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, September 7, 2004, at the LBJ Medical Center in Johnson City, Texas.
Joel was born on October 28, 1913, at the Smith Ranch in Round Mountain, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl C. Smith and Bertha Crownover Smith, sister Cleo Smith Parsons, and brother Glen Crownover Smith.
He lived his life as a rancher, cattleman, and cowboy on the ranch of which he was born and raised. He spent much of his early days traveling the rodeo circuit to rope with friends and relatives, and was still able to ride and throw a loop well into his senior years. He will be remembered for his knowledge of local and family history, his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. He leaves a legacy rich with family tradition and a love of the ranch land.
Joe is survived by his wife of 65 years, Thelma Alderson Smith, who he married on December 22, 1938.
He is also survived by daughter Camilla Jo and her husband Walter Pilgrim of Johnson City, daughter Frankie Ann and her husband Kirby Hohenberger of Johnson City, four grandchildren, Leann Kunz, Midge Dockery, Jason Hohenberger and Jennifer Helfrich, along with five great grandchildren, Quinten Kunz, Kelli Kunz, Devon Dockery, Hannah Dockery and Joel Helfrich.
Visitation was held on Thursday, September 9, 2004 from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm at Crofts Funeral Home in Johnson City, Texas. Memorial service will be held at 10:00 am at Walnut United Methodist Church located approximately three-quarters of a mile west of FM 962 on RR 3347, Round Mountain, Texas. Interment will be immediately following at the Smith Cemetery also on RR 3347. Pall bearers include Kermit Sultemeier, Melvin Sultemeier, Brigham White, Hatch Smith, Quinten Kunz, Jason Hohenberger, Joe Don Dockery, Jason Helfrich and Kenny Boswell.
Memorials may be made to Walnut United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
