Inscription: "Born Ray [sic] Co., Tenn."
"A plain unassuming honest man devoted to his country his family and his God"

"Research Note: He was the son of John McClure and Margaret Kennedy. John and Margaret started for MO in 1835 but he died in Louisburg, AR of cholera. William's mother brought the family on to Barry Co. and settled there. When William married, he went into business with J. T. Keet at Washburn. In 1850 he sold his half interest to J. T. and started his own mercantile business and continued until 1860 when he was elected county sheriff. At the beginning of the Civil War he was engaged in buying and driving horses to Louisiana but was compelled to quit the business at a heavy loss. He then moved to Roaring River and ran the mill there until 1880 when he returned to his farm in Washburn. His first wife was Sarah P. Tennant of Washington Co., AR, born 1825 in Hempstead Co., AR and she died on July 26, 1860. In July 1861, he married Zarilda Jane Gay."
