Alpha May was the only daughter born to Henry Lee Lewis (1882-1919) and Nannie Lee Gosnell (1892-1972). The family was living on Aetna Furnace Road in Hammonsville, Hart Co, KY when she was born. Her father was 25 and her mother was 17 year old. She had 2 younger brothers, Edwin Homer Lewis and Henderson J. Lewis.
