Jimmy Joe worked as a bookkeeper for various businesses in the Memphis area which allowed him to have evenings and weekends free to perform in a multitude of plays, musicals and theatrical productions at Theatre Memphis and Playhouse on the Square. Additionally, he appeared in local television and radio commercials, as well as in prime time television. One of his most memorable roles was that of Elvis Presley's boss in "Elvis, the Early Years," appearing in several episodes of the series. His popularity with the Memphis theatrical community was so great that the Memphis Theatre Awards, the area's equivalent to a Tony, where renamed "the Ostranders" last year in his honor.
In the past decade, he was the owner and operator of Delta Casting, Memphis, serving as agent to locate acting talent for commercials and theatrical productions.
Jimmy Joe was preceded in death by his parents, William and Alma Ostrander. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Ostrander of Memphis, TN, ex-wife, Sandra Ostrander of Memphis, a stepdaughter, Andrea Stamey and stepgrandchild, Mia Stamey of Denver, CO, sisters, Judy Behee of Leavenworth, KS, and Mary Jane Minney of Madera, CA, brothers, Michael Ostrander of Independence and William Ostrander of Kansas City, as well as seven nieces and nephews, uncle, Hugh Ostrander of Kansas City, and numerous cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass in Jimmy Joe's honor to be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Redemptorist) Church, 33rd and Broadway, Kansas City, MO, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2002. Remembrances may be sent to the American Cancer Society or to your local arts organizations.
