Lt. Atherton was an of-ficer aboard the destroyer Meredith, which the Navy announced on October 21 had been lost in the Solomon Islands fighting. He enlisted in the Navy four days after his graduation from Harvard in June, 1940. He took his preliminary training on the battleship Wyoming and was commissioned an ensign at Northwestern University on December 12, 1940. He was assigned to the Meredith and was aboard when she was commissioned in July, 1941. He attended the fleet sound school at Key West and saw service with the Atlantic patrol before going on duty in the Pacific. He visited his home in Louisville on a two-day leave in February, 1942.
