Mahala Upton, one of the best known and
respected residents of Shenandoah Valley, passed away at her home on the morning
of 17 Feb 1913. Grandma Upton was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on 19
Jul 1828, living there until 9 years of age, then moving to Illinois where she
met and married John Upton on 25 Dec 1846, afterward moving to Missouri, living
there a short time, then to Iowa, living there until 1863, when they crossed the
plains by wagon to California, having then seven children, four being born after
settling in Amador County. Seven children, besides forty-nine grandchildren and
fifty-five great grandchildren are living to miss her sadly..... R.T. Upton, Mrs
