James B. Blevins, retired Oklahoma County District Judge, passed from this life June 4, 2012. Born July 20, 1927 to Talt A. and Reba O. Blevins, he was the grandson of Eighty-niners Bill and Millie Blevins and the adored grandson of Myrtle LeMasters.
A lifelong resident of Oklahoma County, he proudly graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1945 and was inducted into the United States Army near the end of World War Two. He returned to civilian life, attending both Texas Christian University to play football and Oklahoma City University.
While at Oklahoma City University he began a life of public service by being elected the County Weigher of Oklahoma County at age twenty-two. He also joined the Forty-fifth Infantry Division and was with the Division on active duty in Korea during the Conflict.
Upon returning to civilian life he finished both college and Law School at Oklahoma City University. He practiced law with his friend, Marvin York, as the firm of Blevins and York, until he was appointed District Judge. In addition to his life as a Lawyer, he was a Mason for sixty-three years,
Boy Scout Leader and a past President of the Capitol Hill Kiwanis Club. A lifelong Presbyterian, he was an ordained elder and Deacon, and a member of the Board of Trustees for Westminster Presbyterian Church. After his retirement, he remained active, and particularly enjoyed his weekly breakfast with retired Oklahoma District Court judges. Upon his return from Korea, he married Marilyn Atchley Blevins, who preceded him in death after nearly sixty years of marriage.
He was also preceded by his parents and his sister, Rita Draper. He is survived by his son, James B. Blevins, Jr. and his wife Cathy Blevins, and his daughter Jeannine Blevins O'Bannon and her husband James E. O'Bannon. His grandchildren are Cameron B. O'Bannon, Colleen K. O'Bannon, James B. Blevins, III, "Buddy", William W. Blevins, "Woody", and Cassandra Blevins Bass and her husband Chris Bass.
He is also survived by his special friend and companion of these last years, Minnie Harris, and her children, Carol England, Carla Romeo, Micki Wilkeson, Susie Zaragosa, Carl Harris, Renee Daxon, their spouses, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. All of his family and friends will miss his playful spirit and his sense of humor.
Services will be held Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at 2 pm at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to: Goodland Academy, P.O. Box 1056, Hugo, Oklahoma 74743.
