Elmer married Thelma May Parrish on May 16, 1940, in Clark County, Washington. The witnesses were Mary W. Kunzman and Thelma's mother. Thelma was born about 1924 to Jacob Cecil Parrish and Laura Jane Rutherford Parrish.

During WWII, Elmer enlisted in the armed forces on July 6, 1943. Among the conflicts Elmer participated in during the war was The Battle of Iwo Jima. After the war, Thelma and Elmer continued to live in Portland and had one son but were later divorced. Thelma later married one Ralph R. Shaw and they were divorced, in May of 1966, in Humboldt County, California.

On September 21, 1948, Elmer married Amba E. Walters, of Seattle, King County, Washington, in Ilwaco, Pacific County, Washington. The witnesses were Gerald D. Simmons and Elmer's brother Edwin.

Presumably, they were divorced as Amba married Albert A. Woog, in Stanwood, Mason County, Washington, on August 31, 1950. Albert was born in approximately 1901, in Washington, and died in 1976, in Seattle. See Memorial# 91264194. A Mrs. Albert Woog, born July 9, 1899, died on July 5, 1963, in Clinton, Whidbey Island, Washington. However, it is not clear that this is the same Mrs. Albert Woog.
