His daughter Julia wrote: "Just before he was 21 years old, the Civil War came on. He was among the first volunteers of Western NC."

Daughter Elsie wrote: "Alfred Wilson fought in the Civil War, 1861-1865. Fighting down in Mississippi, had to brush the frog eggs and scum off the top of the water to drink. He was wounded by a shell explosion and left for dead. Someone found him and cared for him. While fighting, he carried a Bible in his shirt pocket which saved his life from a shot."

Julia: "Four years in war, then 7 or 8 years in SC, helping with the reconstruction of the South."
