The husband of Mary Louise Merritt, who he married on Nov. 24, 1870 at East Medway, MA.
Herbert was an 18 year-old Shoemaker from Duxbury, MA, when he enlisted in that town on May 23, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. E. He was allowed to enlist despite the fact he was missing two fingers from his left hand. However, he was discharged for disability at Halls Hill, VA on Feb. 22, 1862, being cited for his inability to handle a musket.
He resided at Easton and then Ashland, MA following his military service, where he was employed as a shoemaker. He was a member of the Colonel Prescott, G.A.R. Post No. 18, Ashland. He was residing at 72 Irving St., Framingham, MA, when he died at age 68 of pneumonia at Framingham Hospital.
