August 26, 2012:

Today is once again a time of both relief and sorrow for me and my family as my dad left this earth to join my mother who has been impatiently waiting for him for this past seven weeks. We are grateful that his suffering from the effects of time and a massive stroke are over and that he no longer will be struggling against the deep effects of Alzheimer's.

Dad was the proverbial "fix-it" man; always with a hammer, screwdriver, power saw and Elmer's glue. All nine of us kids counted on him to do our repairs whenever they visited our homes sprawled between coast lines. He also saw himself as a "fix-it" man for God; always with his Bible and a word of prayer for those along his path. Both lived their deep and abiding faith in God - - Dad through his ministry in the churches he pastored, then in his work at Moody Bible Institute and then through the work with SOWERS (Servants on Wheels Ever Ready). Mom ministered through her friendships and her handwork (quilts, afghans, clothing, tole paintings and annual hand-made Christmas ornaments. She loved working with the SOWER group as well; traveling across the U.S. to places she had always dreamed of.

All of us children will miss them for our personal reasons but the effects of their lives will stay with each of us and our children and their children. Mom and Dad loved their nine children, their 37 grandchildren, and their 28 (and counting) great-grandchildren. While we will all treasure the mementos created by their hands, those things can never take the place of all the time we were able to share.

Love you, Dad.
