Esther H. Backstrom, 78, of Bethel Park, formerly of West Newton, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003. She was born Nov. 22, 1924, in West Newton, to the late Harvey B. and Ada Rhoades Hand.
She was a member of Peters Creek Baptist Church in Library; a former secretary/treasurer of the First Baptist Church in West Newton; an original board member of the West Newton Swimming Pool Authority; and past president of the West Newton Women's Club. She previously worked as a librarian at the Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, W.Va., and was also a bookmobile librarian.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Edwin and Alvin Hand.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, David R. Backstrom; four children, David Backstrom and wife, Cheryl, of West Newton, Dana Backstrom and wife, Roiann, of Castle Shannon, Danny Backstrom and wife, Marsha, of Peters Township and Darlene Deem and husband, Danny, of Morgantown, W.Va.; and eight grandchildren, Lisa, Bryan, Joseph, Jeff, Eric and Steven Backstrom and Lauren and Scott Deem.
Friends will be received at the J. WILLIAM McCAULEY JR. FUNERAL HOME INC., West Newton, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church, West Newton, with Dr. Glen F. Richardson and the Rev. Greg Adkins co-officiating.
Interment in West Newton Cemetery.
