Mel was born to Oscar and Irma Adolphson. After graduating from Superior High in 1939, Mel attended Gustavus Adolphsus College. On July 13, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to OCS school and then overseas. In Oran, North Africa, he reported to the 125th Field Artillery Battalion, 34th Division. The next two and half years were spent in Italy. After four years of honorable service Melvin was discharged, but he kept in contact with the men in his outfit for the rest of his life. Mel finished college and taught school for a year and then obtained his Master's degree from the University of Wisconsin. Next on his agenda was teaching in Stambaugh, Michigan, where he met and married Miss Lorrice Gronlund on December 30, 1950. After two years together in Michigan, they decided to make the big move to West Palm Beach, Florida. Along for the trip was their infant son. Mel then began teaching History. They soon completed their family with another son. Mel was appointed Dean of Boys, and a few years later made Principal of Golfview Junior High. Then Mel was made Principal of the new John I. Leonard High School. After 13 years, he retired. Mel and Lorrice loved to travel and have seen many countries and had many experiences. When not traveling he indulged in sports, whether it was watching or participating. Mel and his grandson, Chris loved to watch the events on TV. Mel loved golf and was a good golfer. Mel was predeceased by his parents, brother and sisters, and his son, Mark. Survivors are his wife, Lorrice; son, Dan (Mary); daughter-in-law, Barbara; grandchildren, Kimberly, Allyson, Chris and great-grandson, Cayden.
