She lived under the German occupation between 1940 and 1944. Chantal received her baccalaureate degree in 1949 With "mention bien" and went on to "L'Institut D'Optique" in Paris from which she received a degree in optical engineering. She then applied for and was awarded a prestigious Fulbright travel grant and a President's Scholarship to study Physics in the US at Johns Hopkins University. She completed her Masters Degree there and met another Physics Graduate student, Steve Shafroth. They fell in love and a year later were married on July 15, 1954 in Paris, France. During that year she worked for the French Navy and won an award for research in photoelasticimetry. They settled first in the Chicago area where Chantal began her teaching career supported by the recommendation of noted mathematician Jean Dieudonné. They subsequently moved to Swarthmore Pennsylvania where Chantal taught math at the Baldwin School, a prep school for girls. Chantal and Steve finally moved to Chapel Hill, NC where Chantal was offered a position at North Carolina Central University in the Math Department. She taught math and computer science for 27 years, retiring in 1994, as an Assistant Professor. She was an innovative and dedicated teacher who was recognized by a "North Carolina Central University Award for Teaching Excellence." She participated in the design and implementation of a computer assisted learning program while at NCCU and won a sabbatical and grant to study and compare the use of computers in high schools in Japan and the US. After retiring in 1994 she became interested in trying to encourage more girls to pursue studies in mathematics and was a co-founder of the Durham County Women and Mathematics Organization. This program provides women mentors for eighth grade girl.
