Jane was born in September, 1807, in Sheffield, Berkshire, Mass. She died Feb. 11, 1892, in Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan.
*Mrs. Jane Root Austin, another of Monroe's best known and highly respected old citizens succumbed to the ravages of time and passed peacefully to rest. Mrs. Austin was born in Sheffield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts in September, 1807. In 1816 she removed with her parents to Sheffield, Lorain County, Ohio. Nine years later she was married to Henry Austin, then in business at Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a bride, she went from Cleveland, Ohio to Malden, in a sail vessel, thence to Sandwich by cart, and across the river to Detroit; from Detroit to Ann Arbor on horseback, a bridal tour along a bridle path. Mr. and Mrs. Austin removed to Brooklyn, Jackson County, Michigan, in 1832. Eight years later she united with the Presbyterian Church and has since been an earnest worker in all Christian work. In 1837 she came to Monroe, where she has since made her home. Her record has been without ostentation, known most favorably to those who knew her best, an encomium, which one can not ask higher. She was the mother of six children, two daughters and four sons, the youngest passing away in infancy. Her three sons served in the civil war. Chas. F., was killed at Malvern Hill, Va., Harvey B. Austin returned and has since died, leaving but two children of the family living, Postmaster Henry R. Austin of this city and Miss Frances C. Austin of Bronxville, N.Y., with whom Mrs. Austin was living at the time of her demise on the 11th inst. Her remains arrived in Monroe Saturday and were buried Sunday morning from the Presbyterian Church. Rev. L.B. Bissell officiated. MD, 2-18-1892.
