Civil War: Company H, 2nd Ohio Cavalry

Calvin E. Allyn was born at Wellington, Ohio, the son of Matthew Allyn (1794-1860) and Clara Merrill (1794-1876)(1850 US Census). He was 19 years old when he married Albina L. Joyce, 17, at Wellington in 1861, about the same time he enlisted as a private for 3 years on September 9, 1861. Private Allen was mustered into Company H, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, October 8, 1861. He was mustered out at Berryville, Virginia, on September 25, 1864. After the war he settled in Cuyahoga County, first at Cleveland (1870 US Census) and by 1872 at nearby Brooklyn (1880 US Census). He had moved to Los Angeles County, California, by 1891 and became a member of Stanton Post, No. 55, Grand Army of the Republic. He filed for a Civil War veteran pension at Los Angeles April 7, 1892, and received certificate No. 905,564 (Pension File, NARA). He was living in South Pasadena in 1900 (1900 US Census), and in the City of Los Angeles by 1910 (1910, 1920 US Census). He died January 28, 1928, and was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery (Los Angeles Times, Jan. 29, 1928; pg. B9).
