Helene Schlafer, 88, of Freeport, went to be with the Lord with her family by her side, on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at FHN Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Nov. 23, 1923 in Lena, a daughter of George and Addie (Ellis) Buss. She was a graduate of Lena High School and attended Rockford Business College. On June 4, 1949, she married Gaylord Schlafer at the Lena Methodist Church. Helene was a Medical Transcriptionist at FHN Memorial Hospital for 40 years. She was a member of Park Hills Evangelical Free Church.
Surviving are her husband, Gaylord; two sons, Greg (Tammy) Schlafer of Morrison, and Gary (Pam) Schlafer of Elwood; four grandchildren whom she dearly loved, Jodi (Mark) Whitsitt, Urbandale, IA, Jason (Michele) Schlafer, Lexington, KY, Jami Schlafer (Robert Cucinotta), Chicago, and Thomas Schlafer of Morrison; seven beloved great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Shirley Buss of Freeport.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Georgene (Lawrence) Robieson, and Phyllis (Hugh) Schoeny; and two brothers, Dale Buss and Ellis Buss.
She loved the Lord. She dearly loved and enjoyed family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her favorite things to do were to garden and go shopping. She was a very kind and dear friend to many. We want to especially thank all the wonderful people who visited her at the nursing home and hospital. It made her last days very special. Also our thanks go out to the kind and caring people at Freeport Memorial and Hospice.
A celebration of her life ceremony will be on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. at Park Hills Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Mark Balmer officiating. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may after 1 p.m. on Saturday at the church until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Park Hills Free Church or Hospice.
