John W. Aeling one of Fairbury's well known and well liked citizens, passed away last evening at 6 o'clock at this home at 400 East Elm street following an illness of several months duration. He was aged 78 years and 25 days.

John William Aellig was born in Bern, Switzerland, May 5, 1862, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Aellig. He spent his boyhood days there, coming to America when a young man. He first located in Kentucky, later coming to Illinois, where he farmed near Chatsworth for a number of years. Still later he moved to a farm adjoining Strawn where he lived for 30 years. He took an active part in the affairs of that community serving for many years on the Strawn school board and the Strawn village board. He came to Fairbury fifteen years ago and was engaged in operating a cream station ad produce business until failing health caused him to retire.

In this city on Christmas day in 1888 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Gostell. Twelve children were born to them, nine of whom with the widow, survive. They are Mrs. Bertha Ringler, Mrs Esther Watterson, Mrs. Emma Rieger and Fred Aellig of Strawn; Mrs. Hilda Hornickel of Chatsworth; Mrs. Margaret Sohn, of Forrest; Mrs. Louise Hibsch of Fairbury, John Aellig, Jr. of Kempton and Mrs. Mary Lehman of Bourbonnais. Surviving also are a brother, Fred Aellig, of Peoria, 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
