Arrived in Boston, Mass. with his father in 1886 when he was 14. They were stone cutters and found work in Maine where they settled with his mother and siblings who arrived later. He attended Eastern Maine Conference Seminary college where he played football and baseball in the 1890's and later took a job in Charleston, S.C. where he met his wife Lydia Eugenia Simmons. He later settled in Moore County, N.C. where he worked as a school teacher.
