Baughman, Glenn R., 95, passed away on March 10, 2013. He had been in decline since the loss of his second wife, Ada Viola (Fish) Brown Baughman on January 27, 2013. Glenn was born on February 18, 1918, to Harry Sydenham Baughman and Gertrude Lucretia (Johnston) Baughman on a farm near Nash, OK, in Grant County. His parents and ancestors were products of strong Northern ideals and heritage. He had two Union Civil War soldier grandfathers and was related to 18 different Revolutionary War soldiers. He prided himself on his family's history. He spent only a few years in Oklahoma until the family moved to Cheney, KS. He spent the rest of his childhood there and graduated from Cheney High School in 1935. His most favorite subject in vocational school was woodworking. This turned into his first job in Wichita at a cabinet company. Through connections at his Methodist church, he was able to be hired at Santa Fe Railroad in 1937 for 32 cents an hour. On Dec, 25, 1937 he married Velma Frances Wallace at the Cheney Methodist Church. As most newlyweds during the depression, they scrimped and saved to get by. They treated themselves to a movie at the Orpheum Theatre on their wedding day. The tickets were 25 cents each. Glenn worked for the Santa Fe and Velma did sewing at an overall factory. Their faith was of utmost importance and they helped found and built St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Wichita. Glenn even built the kneeling bench that is still in the church. After WWII, Glenn and Velma built a house at 821 S. Vine where they welcomed three children; David Glenn in 1948, Joe Ray in 1950, and Janet Kay in 1958. Glenn was a devoted Christian father to his children, as well as Scoutmaster of Troop 735. He always took vacation to attend camp with his sons as part of their Scouting experience. When Glenn purchased a boat in 1962, he made sure all of his kids could water ski. Many camping trips ensued to lakes where the family enjoyed water skiing and camping. Also, by 1965, the family had visited almost every state west of the Mississippi, including the 1960 Seattle World's Fair, plus a good share of the southern and eastern states. In 1968, Glenn and Velma packed up and moved to Topeka, KS, so Glenn could continue his career as a supervisor with the Santa Fe Railroad. He worked on every Santa Fe caboose at one time or another. He retired from the railroad after 37 years of service. Glenn and Velma then purchased a travel trailer and began touring the United States. They always saved the last week in June to go to Chalk Creek, CO, for the annual Baughman family camping trip. This began in 1966 and lasted until 1997. The tradition continues with the next generation. Their travels took them to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, Scandinavia, and Hawaii. In 1977, they moved back to Wichita, built a new house, and began enjoying the grandchildren. Glenn taught all of his grandkids how to use tools and make things in his basement shop. He also taught them how to haggle at garage sales. In their later years, they enjoyed square dancing, rooting for the Wichita Wings, Kansas Longhauler's camping group, and the company of their closest friends who got together to play Dirty Neighbor. They celebrated both their 50th and 60th anniversaries. Velma passed away in 2003 due to complications of Alzheimer's. They were married 65 years. Glenn moved to the Masonic Home to be close to Velma before her death. He found another love of his life, Ada (Fish) Brown, and married her on February 14, 2004. They were married 9 years. Glenn's mental and physical health declined after Ada's passing. He received wonderful care from Via Christi Riverside Village and Harden Hospice staff during his last days of life. He passed peacefully surrounded by his three children. He is survived by his three children; David (Sheila) Baughman of Newton, KS, Joe (Linda) Baughman of Wichita, KS and Janet Baughman (Charles Waldron) of Cypress, TX; five grandchildren; Kristy Baughman of Kansas City, MO, Nathan Williams of Cypress, TX, Clayton (Alisha) Baughman of Newton, KS, Darci (Steven) Freeman of Houston, TX, Glenn Baughman of Wichita, KS; four great-grandchildren; Harrison and Valerie Baughman, Newton, KS and Bailey and Benny Freeman of Houston, TX. Preceding him in death were his parents, first wife, Velma Frances Baughman, second wife, Ada Viola Baughman, daughter, Glenda Sue, twin sisters Lela McHenry and Letha Bonham, brother, Walter Baughman and his grandson, Douglas Allen Baughman. Family was of utmost importance to him. His legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be today from 6-8p.m. Funeral Service will be held at 1p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2013 all at Hillside Funeral Home West. Burial will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. A memorial has been established with Harden Hospice, 2622 W. Central, Wichita, KS. 67203. Online condolences may be sent to www.HillsideFuneralHomeWest.com
