BEN GARDNER SEWELL, born in Palestine, Texas, March 23, 1911 died Wednesday, December 27, 2000, in Houston. He moved to Houston in 1924, and graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1929. He received a BA from Rice University in 1933, and a LLB from University of Texas School of Law in 1936, a member of Order of Coif, Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Delta Phi. He served in the United States Navy from 1942-1946 as a Lt. Commander. Mr. Sewell practiced General Business and Trial law in Houston in the partnership of Sewell & Riggs. He was a member of the American Law Institute, American Bar Association, Texas Bar Association, American College of Trial Lawyers, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Houston Country Club and R.E. Bob Smith Yacht Club. Mr. Sewell is survived by his wife of 52 years Elizabeth Hall Sewell; daughters Virginia Dorrance Sewell, Bonner Sewell Ball and husband George, Anne Sewell Thomson and husband Joe and Peg Sewell Fuchs and husband Bob; twin brother Roy C. Sewell of Sherman, Texas. Grandchildren Lindsey Morse, Erin Morse, Will Brown, Ben Brown, Neal Thomson, Jim Thomson, Rob Thomson, Helen Fuchs and Ginny Fuchs. The family wishes to express appreciation for the special care of Mr. Sewell's caregivers. Funeral service will be held at 2 o'clock in the afternoon Friday, December 29, 2000, at St. Theresa Church, 6622 Haskell Street, Rev. Stephen E. Tiemann officiating. Private graveside services will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be William Russell Brown, III, Ben Sewell Brown, Neal Gardner Thomson, Frank Putman, Robert Meadows and James A. Elkins, III. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be given to Parkinson's Research Endowment Fund, Baylor College of Medicine.
