Herman's cause of death was water poisoning, according to his grand-daughter Lorraine (Rammer) LeMahieu. However, his death certificate states a heart problem. He was only around 36 when he died.

Pictured to the right are his orphans and his wife at his funeral in 1895 either in Wilson Town or in Sheboygan, where the main Lutheran church is located.

Herman, when close to death, stated to his wife something along these lines: "do not let any of our children marry a Catholic." However, about two decades later his infant girl, Cora married Leonard Rammer, a Catholic from Wilson Township and, after they married, she converted from Lutheranism to Catholicism. She was one of the charter members of the Catholic church in Sheboygan Falls.
