In October 1864, he moved with his family to Hamilton County, Illinois. They traveled in covered wagons, a journey which took about three weeks, and settled in Belle Prairie City. The family formed the first Presbyterian Church in Hamilton County.
In June 1878, James to a farm three and a half miles north of Enfield in Mill Shoals township, White County, Illinois. In September of the following year, he married Virginia Frances Linder in Springerton whom he had met at a prayer meeting. They were members of the Asbury M.E. Church where James served as Superintendent of the Sunday School for 35 years.
Besides working his farm, James Proudfit taught school for sixteen years in and near White and Hamilton counties. James and Virginia had ten children: Mary Adele, Sarah Leora, James Delbert, Florida Lelia, Lavonia Alma, Ernest Bertram, Zella Alice, Myrtle Blanche, Vernon Clifford, and Virgil Dewey.
On December 25, 1925, James suffered a stroke which left him partially paralyzed. According to his obituary, "He bore his sufferings with great patience, and often expressing his willingness to go." James Proudfit died on November 21, 1926.
