→ Was this his only marriage? Most likely not.
Per online records, he did not marry Mary E. Self until 14 Aug 1881, Rains Co, Texas - NOTE was this marriage HIS marriage or perhaps a son by simialr name/initials? Age of wife in census, combined with years said married in census, don't add up [1900 census she's shown as age 38 and married for 33 yrs??]

Joshua had 8 to 11 children. Several were with wife shown as M.C. Quarles in 1880 census. She's believed to be M. Caroline Miller per comments on Ancestry.

There was a law suite filed in Angelina County Texas after the death of Joshua over the land he owned in Angelina, County. Joshua's son, Oscar Phillip had died leaving a son, Curtis, and the children of Joshua did not want Oscar Phillip to have a share in the land and filed this law suit to prevent this. An attorney was appointed by the court for Curtis as he was a minor. The case was lost and Curtis received his father's share which was 13.47 acres. Curtis held his land until 1996.
