FALL RIVER -- Retired Army Maj. Kathleen ""Kate"" M. Dean, 83, of North Main Street died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, at Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late John and Sadie (Griffin) Dean, she graduated from BMC Durfee High School and Bellevue Schools of Nursing.

Ms. Dean joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1942. She took advanced training at the Catholic University of America, the University of Vienna in Austria and the U.S. Military School of Anesthesia in San Francisco. After basic training, she was sent to Hawaii for several months and then went to Saipan in the Mariannas with an advance medical group during World War II. She served in the Army Nurse Corps 27 years until she retired. After World War II, she served in Italy and Vienna.

After leaving Austria in 1954, she went to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where she served two tours of duty and received the Army Commendation Medal with an oak leaf cluster. She received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with two battle stars, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters. For 10 years, she was a nurse anesthetist at Miriam Hospital in Providence and volunteered with the American Red Cross and at Walter Reed Medical Center after her retirement.

She was a member of the Retired Army Nurse Corps Association, American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Army Distaff Foundation, Retried Officers Association, Woodrow L. Silvia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Friends of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. She enjoyed dining with friends and listening to classical music; she was an avid reader.

Survivors include a brother, James D. Dean of Annandale, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Francelind Dean of Westport and Barbara Dean of Fall River; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late John Dean, Joseph Dean, Robert Dean and Eleanor Tetuan. Private arrangements are by Boule Funeral Home, 615 Broadway.
