Vitagliano (Vito) was born in the Casafero section of Marigliano, Campania, Italy, Where he started his family before immigrating on April 4, 1901 to Brooklyn, NY. His wife Rosina Sepe (D'onofrio) and two daughters Carmella and Micela (later changed to Margaret) joined him on July 25, 1902. Soon after his family arrived to America they moved to Hudson County, NJ.

After divorcing Rosina, Vito married and divorced Margaret Alfando and Carmela Battiso Newman before marring Angelina Coliano, whom he stayed with the rest of his life.

During this time Vito, a longshoreman, fathered 10 children and lived in Jersey City, West Hoboken (Union City) and North Bergen always remaining in Hudson County.
