Thelma Ruth Ballard, a Salisbury, NC, native, was killed on Aug 4, 1955 in an air crash near Fort Leonard Wood military reservation, MO. She was a stewardess aboard an American Airlines plane which burst into flames and crashed with all 39 persons aboard being killed.

She was a daughter of Mrs. Maude E. Ballard, Salisbury, NC and C.C. Ballard of SC.

Miss Ballard graduated from Boyden High School, Salisbury, NC in 1953 and worked for H & S Finance Co. for about six months prior to entering training to become a stewardess.

In addition to her parents, she was survived by two brothers, Don Ballard of CA and George Ballard of Charlotte, NC; and two sisters, Mr. R.R. Pleasant of Salisbury and Mrs. G.O. Barger of Charlotte.
