She was a native of Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Plato and Cora Hutchins Guffey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph T. Nichols.

Survivors include two sons, Gene Barnes and Larry Barnes; three daughters, Helen Glisson, Louise McBee and Brenda Tignor; two stepdaughters, Linda Griffin and Marlene Curtis; one brother, Joseph Guffey; one sister, Thelma Melton; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral: Greene Funeral Service, South Chapel, Gastonia, with Justin Whitener officiating.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Park in Rutherfordton.
