Alan was born in Ohio in November 1931. His father owned and operated Clay's Appliance store in Bryan, Ohio for decades. His mother was a home maker with avid interest in gardening and pets.

Alan enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and served honorably until October 1959 (active and reserve). He was a Radio and Radar Specialist. He was B-36 Air Crew qualified and was awarded for Combat Readiness and Distinguished Unit Citations.

Returning to civilian life Alan joined General Motors as an Area Service Manager in the Michigan, Indiana, Ohio region. Alan and his wife Carol moved with their children, from Bryan, Ohio to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Alan retired from General motors in 1986.

In 1987 Alan & Carol moved to Sun Lakes, AZ and enjoyed golfing, swimming and international travel for many years.

Cremated, ashed spread on top of Camelback Mountain, Phoenix, Arizona by sons Jeremy and Timothy, per his wishes. A memorial plaque was placed at his parents headstone in Edgerton, Ohio in 2021 by son Timothy.
