Helen Virginia Carter Austin, 90, widow of John Erwin Austin Sr., a life-long resident of Greenville County, died Jan. 4, 2003.

Born in Aiken, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert Bruce and Tweetie Miller Carter.

Mrs. Austin was a graduate of Winthrop College, and a retired teacher with Greenville County Schools, having taught for 33 years at Welcome High and Carolina High. She was a member of the Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Greenville Woman's Club. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenville and the Hoyt-Lake Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and James E. Fayssoux of Greenville; her son and daughter-in-law, John E. Austin Jr. and Carole of Greenville; four grandchildren, Mary Melissa Austin, J. Austin and his wife, Tricia, Dr. Jef Fayssoux and his wife, Rosemary, and Elliott Fayssoux and his wife, Julie; and four great-grandsons, Bobby Fayssoux, Ben Fayssoux, Jack Austin, and Austin Fayssoux.

She was predeceased by a brother, Robert B. Carter Jr., and a sister, Lucile Cullum.

Graveside services will be today at 3 p.m. at Springwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Baxter Wynn officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Kindergarten, 847 Cleveland St., Greenville, SC 29601, or to the charity of one's choice.

The family is at the home of Martha and James Fayssoux, 113 Aberdare Lane, Greenville.
