MATILDA JANE (BROWN) DERRY

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. Matilda Derry, who died Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Melvin Bedker. Rev. Frank Rumer of Mandan had charge of the services at the Methodist Church. A quartet, Mrs. Curtis Ganung, Lawrence Murphy, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Krutsberg, sang "Rock of Ages" and "In the Garden." Mrs. Murphy was at the organ.

Pallbearers were Gilbert Blakewell, C. J. Fox, Harry Vernon, Melvin Bedker, Harold Markwardt and Leonard Jacobson. Burial was made in the Ellendale Cemetery.

Matilda Jane Brown was born Dec. 4, 1870 in Iowa to James B. and Susannah Brown. She was married to Sherman Derry Oct. 14, 1888. Fourteen children were born to this union. Mr. and Mrs. Derry moved to South Dakota in 1903 and in 1922 they moved to Ellendale, and later moved to Edgeley, ND.

Mrs. Derry was a member of the Methodist Church and had been active in the WSCS. She was an Honorary Member of the Royal Neighbors in the State of Washington. She had been a LaMoure County resident since 1934.

Mrs. Derry had been ailing in health for some time. She was always able to be up and around until two weeks ago when she suffered a stroke which caused her death.

Surviving her are eleven children; Mrs. Fred Jones of Erwin, SD., Mrs. G. H. Blakewell of Clear Lake, IA., Mrs. Glenn Derscheid of Klickatat, WA., Mrs. Walter Martin of Prosser, WA., Mrs. C. J. Fox of Forbes. Mrs. W. J. Harman of Missoula, MT., Mrs. Harry Vernon of Edgeley, Mrs. Melvin Bedker of Edgeley., R. E. Derry of Seneca, SD., T. R. Derry of Frederick, SD., and J. B. Derry of Ordinance, OR. One sister and one brother, Cassie Dunley and John Brown of DesMoines, IA. Fifty-three (53) Grandchildren and Forty-six (46) Great-grandchildren were left to continue the names of "Brown" and "Derry."

Her husband preceded her in death on July 15, 1930; one son died in infancy; two daughters also preceded her in death. Zara Vincent of Edgeley and Belle Garry of Rapid City, SD.

All of the children were here to attend the funeral except J. B. Derry of Ordinance, Or., and Mrs. W. J. Hardman of Missoula, MT. They were here to see their mother when she was quite ill and had left for their homes the Tuesday before she passed away.
