Though there is no first name on this stone, a descendant of this family and a find a grave contributor feels certain that it is Henry, son of Barbara and Herman H. Eickoff. That has been my assumptionThere is not a legible first name on the marker. The marker inscription says "son of H & B Eickhoff." To further complicate matters, the date of death looks to be 1902 on the stone. Looking at the interment records of the cemetery, there is nothing shown for "Son of" but there is an entry for Henry Eickhoff. They show the date buried as 1904 not 1902. According to the cemetery records, Henry is buried at grave 29, next to his mother, Barbara, at grave # 30. This stone lies next to Barbara's. Another piece of the puzzle is a newspaper article appearing in the Dayton Daily Journal on 22 August, 1904 chronicling the death of Harry, aka Henry Eickhoff who, at age 16 drowned "in the Miami at a point a short distance south of Tadmore." "The boy, in company with a lad of similar age was in bathing and at the critical moment, he and Job Bohn were in the middle of the stream. An under current of spring water flows at that point and it is supposed that the victim was seized with cramps due to the undercurrent of cold water. Young Eickhoff gave an appealing cry as he went down. The other boy was unconscious but rescued. "The alarm was given and within a brief period a hundred persons were at the scene, engaged in rescue work. A number of these had hurried from Vandalia.... It was three hours, however, before the body was recovered. It was found near the scene and in water ten feet deep. In about the same spot young Sunderland was drowned last summer." It was reported that the boy's father had died suddenly about a year previous and that the boy, being the eldest in his family (a mother and five children)was largely the support of that family.
