Albert M. "Juke" Byus Jr., 83, of Madison, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 16, 2007, at Boone Memorial Hospital after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Boone County, Juke was born Nov. 12, 1923, the eldest son of the late Albert M. and Audrey McCallister Byus.

He was a graduate of Scott High School in Madison. He proudly served his country in World War II as a member of the United States Navy Seabees, whose official motto is "Construimus, Batuimus"-"We Build, We Fight" and Juke lived his life to honor that motto. Juke was a lifetime member and past Commander of the VFW Daniel Boone Post 5578, and past member and president of the Madison Lions Club. He, along with Nobel Dickens, founded and co-owned D&B Office Supply in Madison, providing area residents with top-quality printing and business supplies. He was employed by Y&O Coal Company, as well as Beth Energy Mines of Van. Juke was an active member of the Madison United Methodist Church, where he attended services faithfully and maintained the church website until his health deteriorated. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and could be found watching repeats of past Braves games any time of the day.

In addition to his parents, the love of his life, his wife and best friend, Dora Z. Miller, preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Stephen of Madison, and son and daughter-in-law, James "Jim" and Donna of Madison. Being the ever loving grandfather, he also leaves behind two precious granddaughters, Kristin of Morgantown and Nicole of Madison; also his brother, Bob, and wife Judy Byus of Madison; two nephews; and one niece.

He touched the lives of many people with his kind and gentle nature. The host of friends surviving Juke will always remember his sense of humor, his love of baseball and most importantly, his love of family.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, with Dr. Frank Frye officiating. Burial will follow with military rites by VFW Daniel Boone Post No. 5578, Madison, at Boone Memorial Park, Madison. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Madison United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 216, Madison, WV 25130.
